Jol Fashion BD: Hand-Painted Sarees and Boutique Wear from Khulna, Bangladesh
Jol Fashion BD is a women's clothing brand from Khulna, Bangladesh. SD Pannu paints every piece by hand: hand-painted sarees, three piece sets and panjabi, delivered anywhere in the country. The name jol means water, and the work is watercolour on cloth, painted one piece at a time. Because each piece is painted on its own, no two are exactly alike.
What you can buy
- Hand-painted sarees on muslin, half silk, cotton and organza. The heart of everything we make.
- Cotton and handloom sarees, tant, woven by families we buy from directly.
- Block-print and printed sarees for everyday wear at an everyday price.
- Three piece sets, unstitched kameez, salwar and orna.
- Hand-painted panjabi for men, including couple sets.
- Orna and chador, painted to match a saree or painted on their own.
New designs come out for Eid, Durga Puja and Pohela Boishakh, including the red and white sarees people look for at Boishakh.
Painted by one person
There is no design team here and no printing machine. SD Pannu paints জবা (hibiscus), গোলাপ (rose), birds among small flowers, peacocks, নকশী patterns, and village scenes across the back of a panjabi. The same motifs come back again and again, each time a little differently.
Why a hand-painted saree costs more
A printed saree is made by a machine, a hundred at a time, in an afternoon. A hand-painted muslin saree takes several days. Muslin is so fine that a brush loaded wrong bleeds straight through the cloth, so the paint goes on in thin layers, with drying time between them. You are paying for those days. In return you get a piece nobody else owns.
We also teach
Live hand-painting classes are open to anyone who wants to learn fabric painting, whether that is for yourself or to start a boutique collection of your own.
