Neel Dorja – Hand-Painted Panjabi in White

Neel Dorja means blue door. This is the quietest subject of the four and the most careful piece of painting: an old stone doorway, the door itself blue and slatted, a water pot on the step, and a flowering creeper coming over the top of the frame in pink and yellow.

The ground is white, so the paint is doing all the work. The floor of the scene is drawn in fine ruled lines that run out onto the plain cloth at the hem, which is the detail people notice second.

Care

Hand wash the first time, cold water, no soaking. Painted cloth does not like being left wet, so wash it and hang it. Dry in shade, never in strong sun. Iron on the reverse and keep the iron off the painting itself.
